Vandalisation: Imo Assembly urges state govt to deploy security personnel in public schools

The Imo State House of Assembly has called on the state government to deploy security personnel in both primary and secondary schools across the state to prevent vandalisation of facilities.

The House made the call following a motion by Clinton Amadi, the member representing Owerri Municipal Council.

He informed the house that the activities of area boys have forced some teachers and students to stop going to school to avoid being harassed by miscreants who always occupy the premises.

Amadi said the area boys are undermining efforts being made by the government to provide quality education to the citizens.

“The activities of these criminals and vandals who invade the school premises during and after school period has turned our school premises to dangerous zones and made the environment deplorable.

“These criminals defecate around the school premises, smoking indian hemp and other drugs, turning the class rooms, teachers and headmaster’s office to chalets at night, littering the premises with all forms of illegal items like used condoms remaining pieces of weed and others,” he said.

The lawmaker added that the area boys also threaten the lives of teachers and students who try to challenge them.

After much deliberations on the motion, the House resolved to urge the governor to mandate the commissioner of education in charge of primary and secondary schools to collaborate with relevant agencies to provide adequate security in the schools, during and after school period, to curtail the activities of the area boys.
