The Rector, Kogi State Polytechnic Dr Salisu Ogbo has given reasons why the management of the institution stopped students from celebrating after their final year examination.
Dr Ogbo who disclosed this when he received the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, (NITP) on Monday in his office said cultists use the happy moment of the students to cause mayhem on campus.
The Polytechnic Rector recalled that in 2019, a student was killed at the back of the Polytechnic Matriculation Ground when some suspected cultist clashed inside the school after student finished their final examination.
He said the institution which was established over 29 years ago has been faced with cult-related activities which have been curbed since his assumption of office in 2020.
“Whenever students finish their examination, there would be gunshot everywhere. The height of it all is when a student was killed at the matriculation ground.
“We got security reports that the killing of 2019 will be avenged in 2021 based on security reports. That was why we passed a circular that nobody would be allowed to celebrate on campus. How do they normally go about this?
“They will start with pouring water, later mud, and then it turns to acid and many more. During such celebrations, that is how cultist come out to unleash mayhem.
“How will you celebrate the end of an exam when you have not seen your result. By the grace of God, we were able to put things in order to avoid the break down of law on campus. I can’t condemn my predecessors. I must improve on what they have built upon that is why I was appointed by his excellency” he stated.
Ogbo, who lauded NITP for donating many books to the school library said since the present management came on board, they have injected over 80 million into library development through TETFUND.
Earlier, the National President, Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, (NITP), TPL Olutoye Ayinde said planning precedes development, stressing that many areas have been developed with proper planning.
He emphasized that the failure of professionalism often results in the failure of any nation, just as he charged the rector to assist the student in terms of equipment and improvement in the welfare of workers in the institution.
