We will ensure that the elections are done on a one-man, one-vote basis. At the end of the exercise, the outcome of the elections will reflect the will of the people,&#8221; he said.</p> <p>He also dismissed the belief that collecting or hoarding Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) could influence election results, saying technological improvements had made such tactics ineffective.</p> <p>&#8220;INEC has done a lot so that people cannot use another person&#8217;s PVC to vote in an election. That is why politicians have resorted to vote-buying. Many of them are still living in the past because stockpiling PVCs cannot guarantee electoral victory,&#8221; he said.</p> <p>The INEC official urged political parties and candidates to focus on issue-based campaigns instead of violence.</p> <p>He advised them to present their programmes to voters and allow the electorate to make informed choices.</p> <p>&#8220;Political parties and their candidates should obey the rules, focus on selling their manifestoes to voters and avoid any form of violence before, during and after the elections. Worse still, an additional N3.19 trillion classified as &#8220;budget support&#8221; was obtained despite no such provision existing in the approved budget, with no clear disclosure of its source.</p> <p>&#8220;This is not an isolated incident. It fits into a disturbing pattern that has become the defining signature of the Tinubu administration: duplication, opacity and reckless fiscal management.</p> <p>“This is the same government that has been caught creating fake agencies, padding budgets with duplicated allocations, hiding trillions under the mysterious Service Wide Vote, allocating obscene sums for luxury SUVs while critical sectors gasp for survival, and now borrowing far beyond the limits approved by law.</p> <p>“What exactly is all this borrowing funding? Certainly not education, where children continue to learn under deplorable conditions. Certainly not healthcare, where hospitals remain underfunded. Certainly not security, where innocent Nigerians are massacred while security agencies complain of inadequate funding. Certainly not infrastructure, because the roads remain death traps and electricity has become an expensive luxury.</p> <p>“The tragedy is that Nigerians are being forced to service debts whose benefits they cannot see. Even more troubling is the contradiction that defines this administration. Only days ago, it emerged that high crude oil prices have handed the Federal Government an estimated N7.98 trillion oil windfall, yet instead of reducing borrowing, the government has continued to pile debt upon debt. The new schedule for the postponed exams will be communicated in due course.&#8221;</p> <p>When contacted, the SUG president of the institution, Comrade Owoigbe Blessing, said, “It happened in the midnight. A female final year student that was supposed to sign out&nbsp;tomorrow&nbsp;was shot dead to her face over the night.</p> <p>&#8220;Our direct message to the government is that they should enforce security across all campuses and its environment in the state. Ilaro also reported a case last week, the government should enforce maximum security across our campuses. Lagos varsity workers issue seven-day ultimatum, threaten indefinite strike over unresolved demands

<img width="1920" height="1080" src="https://dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/strike.jpeg" class="webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image" alt="" style="display: block; margin: auto; margin-bottom: 5px;max-width: 100%;" link_thumbnail="" decoding="async" loading="lazy" srcset="https://dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/strike.jpeg 1920w, https://dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/strike-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/strike-1024x576.jpeg 1024w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /> <p>Workers’ unions in Lagos State-owned universities have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the state government to address their outstanding welfare demands, warning that failure to do so could result in an indefinite industrial action.</p> <p>The unions are demanding the immediate implementation of agreements reached between the Federal Government and major university-based unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, and National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, which they said became effective from January 1, 2026.</p> <p>They also called on the government to release funds for the payment of the N50,000 palliative announced for workers on May 1, 2026, stressing that failure to meet their demands within the stipulated period would leave them with no option but to embark on a strike.</p> <p>The ultimatum was announced on Monday during a joint press briefing by the Joint Action Committee, JAC, of Lagos State-owned universities, held at the Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo campus.</p> <p>Representatives of ASUU, the Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, SSANU and NAAT attended the briefing, where they appealed to the state government to take immediate steps to prevent a disruption of academic activities in the affected institutions.</p> <p>The institutions affected include Lagos State University, LASU, Lagos State University of Science and Technology, LASUSTECH, Lagos State University of Education, LASUED, and Lagos State University College of Medicine, LASUCOM.</p> <p>Addressing journalists on behalf of the unions, ASUU-LASU Chairman, Prof. Ibrahim Bakare, said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had announced the N50,000 palliative for all Lagos State workers during the May 1, 2026 Workers’ Day celebration.</p> <p>Bakare explained that government communication on the initiative indicated that staff of tertiary institutions were included, but noted that while civil servants in the state received the payment, workers in state-owned universities were left out despite several engagements with relevant authorities.</p> <p>He said the unions had made several efforts to resolve the matter through consultations and official correspondence with key government officials, including the governor, deputy governor, commissioners for Tertiary Education and Establishments, Training, the Head of Service, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, the Accountant-General, and other relevant officials.</p> <p>However, Bakare expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s response, describing the communication received from authorities as unclear and lacking a definite commitment to fulfilling the promise made to university workers.</p> <p>“We explored every peaceful and reasonable avenue available to us because we believe in dialogue. Unfortunately, our members have become exhausted and can no longer continue to wait while other categories of public servants have received the payment,” he said.</p> <p>He stated that following consultations among workers across the affected institutions, the unions decided to give the government seven days to resolve the issue and commence the release of funds.</p> <p>Bakare warned that if the demands were not addressed before the expiration of the ultimatum, the unions would be forced to consider industrial action.</p> <p>“We pray industrial action does not happen, but if we are pushed to that point, we will have no other option. We cannot continue to allow our members to suffer under the current economic realities,” he said.</p> <p>The ASUU-LASU chairman also disclosed that Lagos State had accumulated seven months of unpaid obligations arising from Federal Government agreements with university unions.</p> <p>He recalled that Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat had earlier assured workers that future agreements reached with the Federal Government would be implemented promptly to prevent the accumulation of arrears.</p> <p>Bakare noted that some state-owned universities in Ekiti and Osun states had already implemented similar agreements, describing the delay in Lagos as unexpected considering the state’s status as one of Nigeria’s most developed states.</p> <p>The unions further appealed to the government to address other outstanding welfare issues, including the release of staff buses promised by Governor Sanwo-Olu and the resolution of the 20 per cent salary-related matter raised during previous negotiations.</p> <p>Also speaking, NASU-LASU Chairman, Comrade Obafemi Sanni, accused the government of showing insufficient commitment towards resolving issues affecting workers in tertiary institutions.</p> <p>Sanni said the unions had been compelled to issue the ultimatum because of the prolonged delay in implementing agreements reached with the government.</p> <p>He maintained that unless urgent steps were taken before the deadline, the unions would have no choice but to commence an indefinite strike.</p> <p>The workers’ representatives reaffirmed their commitment to dialogue but insisted that addressing staff welfare concerns was necessary to maintain industrial peace and stability across Lagos State-owned universities.</p> <p>They also appealed to the state government to act swiftly, warning that many workers were facing severe hardship.</p> <p><a href="https://dailypost.ng/2026/07/28/lagos-varsity-workers-issue-seven-day-ultimatum-threaten-indefinite-strike-over-unresolved-demands/">Lagos varsity workers issue seven-day ultimatum, threaten indefinite strike over unresolved demands</a></p>

‘The President allows it’ – Falana hits Tinubu over alleged N1.4bn budget padding

And that is what we call budget padding. Members of the National Assembly insert projects into the budget of agencies of government,” Falana said.</p> <p>“Now that it has been exposed I hope there will be a re-examination and review of the budget. They were illegally inserted into the budget.”</p> <p>He lamented that despite repeated exposures, the practice continues because the President fails to veto the illegal insertions, saying “We have always tried to expose them. But it appears that the President of the country allows it because, the President has the right to object to illegal insertions into the budget. But these days, they are allowed by the President.”</p> <p>The senior lawyer also raised concerns over unchecked corruption at the federal level, questioning how an individual could amass several buildings without detection due to weak institutions.</p> <p>“Once you have a system that is loose, and at that time it was a free for all, there were no checks and balances and it’s still likely going on. It is when the current government is out of power that you will also know the enormity of the looting that has occurred,” he warned.</p> <p>Falana urged Nigerians to take action against graft by reporting suspicious wealth to anti-graft agencies, opining that reforming the country requires collective action by citizens and the media to hold leaders accountable at all levels.</p> <p>“If you know that somebody is building houses beyond his means, you have the right to even secretly report to the EFCC or ICPC and then pursue it.
