The Katsina State Government has moved to recruit 708 vigilantes to protect schools, particularly those in security-prone areas of the state.

The Commissioner for Basic and Social Education, Yusuf Jibia, disclosed this while briefing journalists to mark the 2026 International Day to Protect Education from Attack.

Jibia said Governor Dikko Radda had approved the recruitment as part of measures to strengthen security around schools.

He added that the government had directed public schools to establish security committees comprising representatives of security agencies operating in their areas.

The commissioner also disclosed that mobile police personnel had been deployed to provide security for secondary schools, particularly those with boarding facilities.

He said the government was also constructing perimeter fences around schools to improve physical security.

Jibia further said the state had established a technical working group under its Safe Schools Policy, comprising government agencies, security institutions, development partners and civil society organisations.

The group, he said, would work with Save the Children International on measures to improve the safety of schools across the state.
