College of Education Akwanga grounded as joint union declares indefinite strike

Academic and non-academic activities at the Nasarawa State College of Education, COE, Akwanga, came to a halt on Wednesday as workers, under the umbrella of the Joint Union, declared an indefinite strike to push for their demands.

The decision was communicated in a letter dated Tuesday, March 19, citing the institution’s Governing Council’s insensitivity and lack of response to previous ultimatums.

The union stated that the strike action became necessary due to the non-implementation of promotions from 2019 to date, non-payment of backlog gratuity owed by the College, and non-payment of promotion arrears from 2015 to date.

These unresolved issues were pointed out in the letter addressed to the Chairman of the Governing Council.

Despite the strike, the joint union acknowledged the efforts of the Commissioner of Education, Mr John Mamman, and the Jonathan Thani-led management of the College for their interventions in attempting to resolve the issues.

The union, comprising COEASU, SSUCOEN, and NASU, expressed appreciation for the interventions but stated the need for concrete actions to address their grievances.
