University don proffers solution to cybercrime in Nigeria

A university don and computer expert, Professor Rasheed Gbenga Jimoh, has tasked the federal government to support the use of biometric technology in public places to check cybercrime activities in the country.

Professor Rasheed, also recommended the use of fingerprint authentication in all educational processes within the university system to prevent cases of impersonation and campus insecurity.

He said students biometrics could easily be collected from the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB’s Central Admission Processing System, CAPS.

He made the recommendations while delivering the 239th inaugural lecture of the University of Ilorin, on Thursday, at the main campus of the institution, titled ” Deconstructing The Crawling Mindsets: Combatting Security Challenges of Net-Centric Computing.”

Professor Rasheed, warned that “We must understand the reality that integration of ICT within a Net-Centric computing environment for seamless operations is not contest able except we settle for crawling at a jet age with serious implications of not catching up with our competitors and the rest of the world.

“Thus, crawling in the digital era when the rest of the world is moving at a very fast pace, can never be an acceptable option,” he declared.

Professor Rasheed of the Department of Computer Science in the University of Ilorin, said “the option left to us is to wake up to the calls and find a way of eliminating or reducing the cybersecurity challenges associated with operations on the emerging Net-Centric computing environment through adoptions of information security management ethics and standards coupled with implementation of suitable cybersecurity technics capable of achieving reliable authentication, security risk mitigation, secured sharing of information and information resources, intrusion-free operations and integrity proven cyber activities.”

He said sophisticated authentication methods should be encouraged to guarantee security of both card and card-less financial transactions, so as to prevent all associated financial frauds.

According to him, adequate research attentions should be given to security of operations in Grid-based computing environment towards sustainable quality of service in the Grid environment.

He also urged the government to double its efforts and provide funds for aggressive awareness on the need for cultural adaptation to the emerging digital era with specific attention geared towards the use of the basic Nigerian languages.

The university don, advised organizations to hire experts in the core areas of information and cybersecurity with adequate training and retraining given the dynamism of the discipline.
