The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal has said the state was bankrupt when he took over the mantle of leadership.
Speaking on Wednesday evening at an interactive session with Zamfara professionals in Abuja, he explained that things in the state were really in a bad state before 29th May 2023.
He stated that in the history of the state, this was the first time the people and professionals from Zamfara State will seat together to interact for the progress of the state.
He said, “I am delighted to hear some of the comments made. It is indeed incredible.”
The governor assured that things were going to change for the better, lamenting that he inherited a three-month salary backlog with no single money to take care of the civil servants.
He said at the time he took over, the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) exam was already over and students were unable to sit for it.
The governor said the state was owing WAEC about N1.6 billion and NECO about N1.4 billion which was why the students were unable to sit for the exams, stressing that his government had recently paid off NECO’s debt.
He pointed out that outside security, education is another major investment, without which the state will go nowhere.
He explained that his government had commenced the reconstruction of primary schools and building the capacity of the teachers to boost their productivity.
Governor Lawal said he was committed to changing the condition of hospitals in the state and solicited professionals’ support to build the state in the interest of the people.
As part of the efforts to tackle the security challenge in the state, he explained that he met with the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff and the National Security Adviser on different occasions.
He also highlighted his meeting with officials of the European Union and the World Bank on issues of insecurity, education, health and infrastructural development, and that they were ever ready to provide support.
