Subsidy Removal: Tough but courageous decision – Arewa youths

The Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA), has called for understanding and support for President Bola Tinubu over the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), better known as petrol.

The Speaker, Arewa Youth Assembly, Mohammed Salihu Danlami, while speaking to newsmen in Kaduna on Thursday noted that the removal of the fuel subsidy is a tough but courageous decision by the present administration, saying that the previous administration failed to take such decisive action.

He noted that it is very thoughtful, a sign of good faith and continuity for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to keep up with the fuel subsidy removal, stressing that the foundation was laid by the immediate past administration.

He commended the efforts of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Ltd in addressing the nation and promptly making adjustments to the price of PMS to tackle fuel hoarders in parts of the country.

According to Danlami, Nigeria previously pays an average of N120 billion monthly on petrol subsidy, urging Nigerians to resist the temptation and instigation by those fanning the embers of hate to cause chaos and instability in the country.

He further explained that subsidy removal is in conformity with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA Act) 2021 which provides total deregulation of the petroleum downstream section to drive investment and growth.

Danlami decried the fact that subsidy has been the reason why Nigeria has remained stagnant for years with the benefits being enjoyed by only a few rich Nigerians that do not even need the subsidy.

He alleged that a few top politicians and key government officials were making billions of dollars from subsidy while the majority of Nigerians were unable to afford quality education, healthcare, infrastructure, electricity, telecommunications, stable power supply, and agriculture and are faced with a high rate of unemployment and abject poverty.
