Governor Muhammad Umar Bago of Niger State has volunteered to assist the National Examination Council, NECO, in recovering its debt from other states of the federation. The Governor made this disclosure during a visit by the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of NECO, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, at the Government House, Minna. Recall the Registrar had in February announced, during the release of the results of the 2022 Senior School Certificate Examination, SSCE, external, in Minna, that states are owing the council over N2 billion in debt for the examination. Bago also disclosed that he had approved N30 million in monthly instalments to offset huge debts it owes the Council for the SSCE of public schools in the state. Speaking on the fluctuating turnout and performance of registered students for SSSE, the Governor directed the Secretary to the Niger State Government (SSG) to look into the root causes. He then called on the Council to do more regarding Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSRs) to the state. Earlier, the NECO CEO had told the governor that Niger State had experienced fluctuating registration figures for SSCE from 2018 to 2022. He then called on the state government to make NECO examinations compulsory for all the public schools in the state. He assured him of its readiness to partner with the state to enhance education in line with its core values. N2bn debt: I’ll follow up on states owing – Niger Gov, Bago to NECO
