Kebbi state branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), under the leadership of Dr Ibrahim Yale, has raised the alarm that Kebbi State University of Science and Technology Aliero (KSUSTA) is on the brink of collapse.
The unionist in a press conference held at the university said that the governing council is pushing academic staff into a forceful brain drain due to their carefree attitudes towards the condition of the University as contained in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) which was signed between ASUU and Kebbi state government since December the 20th, 2019.
Comrade Yale stated that some critical unmet demands of the union may be responsible for the brain drain and collapse of the University if they remain unaddressed, the demands include payment of annual increments not paid since 2017, implementation of promotions from 2020, 2021 and a huge backlog of unpaid promotion arrears of 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
The demands also include among others the implementation of consequential salary adjustment being enjoyed by other state universities in the country but KSUSTA is being denied by the state government, and the second trench of earned allowance from 2014 to 2021 has not been paid.
He lamented that some Doctors of Kebbi origin who were newly promoted to the rank of professors are only by name as nothing has been added to their take-home pay, if the situation remains they will be forced to leave the university which the union finds disturbing.
Another critical problem of the University according to him is the gross lack of funding for a new college of health sciences which the university management is using internally generated revenue to fund which is not sustainable as there is no support from the government of Kebbi state.
However, the entire university is funded by TETFUND and NEEDS assessment otherwise the university would have collapsed since, even now he noted there are no hostels for students, no office accommodation for staff no equipment in the laboratory for students’ practicals, no good access roads to the campus no effective and steady power supply in the school.
He decried the low overhead of N5m which cannot even power supply bills not to talk of maintenance of the University, he called on well-meaning people of Kebbi state to come to the aid of the University to save it from total collapse he said.
