257 health facilities, schools ravaged by flood in Jigawa – UNICEF


The United Nations Children’s Funds, UNICEF says over 257 health facilities and schools have been ravaged by flood in Jigawa State.

The Head of UNICEF, Kano field office Mr. Rahama Rihiod Mohammed Farah, disclosed this after an assessment of affected communities.

Represented by the UNICEF senior education manager, Mr. Michael Banda said during the assessment tour, about two affected communities were found to be worse hit and twenty-five IDPs were visited.

“During our visit to some of the IDPs, we observed that children and women are the most vulnerable and they lack some of their basic needs and are exposed to violence and abuse such as sexual abuse, neglect, and exploitation”

“Malaria, catarrh and diarrhoea are the most predominant health challenges they are exposed to,” he said.

“Over 230 health facilities were affected out of which 30 flooded and over 200 were damaged as a result of the flooding”

” 27 schools are flooded, 18 schools are being used as IDP camps”

DAILY POST reports that the flood has killed over 130 people and destroyed properties worth billions of Naira.
