The National Association Of Nigerian Students (NANS) ZONE D, has called on the Lagos State Police Command to begin a full investigation into the controversies surrounding what it called the unfortunate but preventable death of Sylvester Oromoni, a 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Lagos.
The association stated that “information at our disposal reveals that the young boy was tortured to death by some unscrupulous and unpatriotic students of Dowen College.”
The body said it was “disheartening and sardonic that the institution’s management is trying its best to sweep the matter under the carpet by not just changing the story behind the death of the young general but equally hiding the identities and faces of the perpetrators of the capital crime.”
While condemning in its entirety the death of Oromoni, NANS called on the Homicide Section of the Lagos State CIID to be unbiased and transparent in investigating the matter.
According to a statement made available to DAILY POST on Sunday by the NANS Zone D Coordinator, Adetunji Emmanuel, the students charged the Ministry of Education to withdraw the operational license issued to Dowen College, alleging that “the school has proceeded to online classes despite the shutting down of the said institution the by Lagos State Government.
“NANS Zone D is calling for speedy justice on the subject matter while the perpetrators are brought to book regardless of how highly placed, influential or wealthy their parents may be.”
The association also urged the Lagos State Government and other South West states to approve the constitution of PTA in all public and private schools.
“Info at our disposal reveals that Dowen college has no PTA thereby making students to die in silence as they only see their parents during the holiday, which is equally applicable to other schools yet to be uncovered.
“Following the ugly development of Dowen college and series of other reports of malnutrition, lack of adequate security, lack of adequate medical facilities among several others in other institutions of learning despite huge amounts being paid by parents basically to give their kids the very best of qualitative education have been brought to our secretariat, the zone shall be setting up a task force to embark on a fact-finding mission to public and private schools in South West to ascertain if a PTA has been constituted or in existence and to equally access the state of our hostels. The zone shall be extending the visitations of hostels to our tertiary institutions,” it was said.
