Panic in FCET Zamfara over alleged invasion by bandits

There was panic at the Federal College of Education Technical (Female) in Gusau, Zamfara State capital over the alleged invasion of the college by bandits.

Most of the students were seen leaving the college premises barefooted following the alarm while confused staff members scampered around for safety.

Some of the students who spoke to newsmen at the school premises said they were afraid of the rumoured bandits’ invasion and were not sure if the bandits will attack as rumoured.

“We cannot stay in the school when there are speculations about the presence of bandits in the Institution or nearby the College fence”, they added.

DAILY POST reports that the speculations in Gusau, the state capital attracted the attention of the state Governor, Bello Mohammed Matawalle and all the security chiefs in the state.

Addressing newsmen at the school premises, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ayuba Elkanah said there was no bandits attack or invasion of the School.

” This is fake news, there was nothing like bandit’s attack at the School, just a mere rumour and we all here, including the state Governor to assess the situation and it turns out to be a lie”, he added.

The state police boss explained that ten of the Yansakai members have been arrested, saying they were at the state CID in Gusau, the state capital undergoing interrogations.

Fielding questions from newsmen, the school’s Acting Provost, Dr Umar Bello said the rumour scared the students and they ran for safety, saying none of the students were injured.

“It was just a mere rumour because nothing of such happened in the Institution”

When asked if he could link the speculations to the letter written to the school authority by some bandits to attack the school, he confirmed receiving a letter from a group which he said was forwarded to security agencies in the state.

“But the issue of that letter has been resolved by the security agencies. And since then the bandits have not stormed the institution”

Reacting, the state Governor, Bello Mohammed Matawalle said the speculation went viral in Gusau, saying that somebody texted him to inform him that the school was under serious attack.

The Governor ordered the Police to provide an outpost and also ensure the reconstruction of the fallen fence for proper protection of the school.

The Governor ordered the provost to as a matter of urgency bring back all the students to continue their education in the school.
