Muslim Women in Bauchi State has described education as a tool for improving national security, saying it has to be all-embracing to achieve that.
Chairperson, of the women, under the aegis of Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria, (FOMWAN), A’ishatu Ibrahim Kilishi said this at a two-day education summit, organised by the Bauchi chapter with the theme, “Achieving Total Development Through Quality Education In The Midst of Security Challenges”, held at Central Mosque Conference Hall, Bauchi.
Kilishi noted that education goes beyond teaching youths reading and writing alone as it plays a significant role in the maintenance of peace and security.
“Education is a tool for improving national security. It plays a significant role in the maintenance of peace and security. The education that enhances security goes beyond teaching youths reading and writing alone; it must be all-embracing.”
She said education was very important for the socio-economic, political, scientific and technological advancement of any society, explaining that it remained a tool for poverty eradication and human development.
While assuring that FOMWAN will continue to impact positively on the educational progress of the Muslim Ummah, both in the state and the country generally, she said the association was deeply involved in developing and promoting access to education in the state.
Kilishi explained that FOMWAN was concerned about girl-child education, adding that educating the girl-child was certainly one of the best investments to overcome poverty, ignorance and disease.
She, however, observed that education in the state, in particular, and Nigeria in general is facing some challenges that need to be quickly addressed.
“We have noticed that inadequate funding, poor implementation of national policies on education, the politicisation of education, mismanagement, wastages, inadequate data as some of the factors that culminate in poor quality of education in the country,” she said.
In her keynote address, the National Amirah of the association, Alhaja Rafi’at Idowu Sanni, explained that FOMWAN had five cardinal principles which included education of the female, education of the girl-child and provision of humanitarian services, among others.
According to her, the education summit was one of the strategies developed by FOMWAN to sensitise and mobilise the populace, especially stakeholders in the sector and the Muslim Ummah in general to accord priority to education.
She noted with delight that gone were the days when the association was looked down upon as a group with members of low level of education, adding that FOMWAN now confidently boosts of members with doctorates and professorial education.
Sanni said FOMWAN was an education-focus organisation promoting the educational development of women, youths and children through the establishment of formal and non-formal schools, including vocational centres across the federation.
