Chairman of the South East Governors Forum and Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi on Tuesday said that the structure, sit-at-home order declared by the leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, have been hijacked by criminals.
Umahi made this known while addressing the South East Council of Traditional Rulers during a meeting that took place at the Christian Ecumenical Centre Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital.
The governor blamed the IPOB leadership for allowing cultists and other hoodlums to hijack their sit-at-home order and resulted in killings of innocent citizens of the region.
According to him: “Traditional institution is very important and it’s the bedrock of Ndigbo, that’s why I’m overwhelmed with the unity and the love, oneness existing amongst the traditional rulers of Southeast.”
He equally blamed the insecurity in the Southeast region on the sit-at-home declared by IPOB.
He said, “We all know that IPOB has been hijacked by cultists and criminals in the society.
“And that is why it is very important that those who said they are fighting for the emancipation, for the freedom of the Igbo land to take a deeper look at our situation today. Why are we still having killings in Southeast, is it still for the same agenda? Are there other things we do not know?
“I know that leaders do not come up to speak in Southeast because of fear of selective killings, but we know all these children, we know their fathers but our leaders in the church, our cultural leaders, your majesties can find a way to begin to talk to our people.
“My advice is that we should do more as leaders of Southeast, to know whether those who said they are fighting for us are really fighting for us.
“You might have been hearing me talking about VAT, our position is that, Southeast you are seeing was the bedrock of the development of this country. We must remember the era of palm oil. We must remember the efforts of Southeast people in the development of every sector of the economy in the whole Nigeria.
“Every state in the Southeast must join me to say, look, whether it is the right of state or federal government, let us not upset the system, the chain is as strong as the weakest link,” he stated.
Earlier in a remark, the Obi of Onitsha, HRH Alfred Achebe, who spoke on behalf of the traditional rulers in southeast, said there is need for all the leaders of the south east to work together for the development of the region.
He said: “We must work together, respect each other and work according to our established rules and regulations.
“We must identify the challenges that face us as traditional leaders, culture, tradition, safety, security at the local level, education, enterprise, and so on,” he stated.
