The leadership of the Taraba State chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku to as a matter of urgency commence the implementation of the 2021 agreement made with the union.
The Union also expressed dismay over the spate of insecurity that had enveloped the institution.
They beckoned on stakeholders in the state to wade in by mounting pressures on the governor to honour the agreements in order to prevent the union from downing their tools.
The state chairman of the union, Samuel Shikaa, who made the call via a press statement, felt sad that the state government under the leadership of Ishaku “is not sensitive to the plights of the Union “.
Wondering why the government has continued to drag its feet by failing to fulfill its own parts of the agreements with the union, the union, according to him, is at the verge of being pushed to the wall.
The union which embarked on industrial action early this year, was compelled to suspend their strike following the agreements reached by both parties after series of round table dialogue.
In the said agreement, the government was observed to had promised to expedite action towards completion of the University’s parameter fence to ensure the security of staff and students on campus.
Sad that no steps have been embarked upon to address the situations, the union, as stated by him, is fast losing its temper.
He said “we are disturbed that work on the parameter fence has remained on standstill with grave security implications to staff and students.”
Citing the numbers of staff that have been kidnapped in the institution, “security” as stated by him “has worsened on the campus.”
Lamenting that staff on campus have become cheap targets of hoodlums and kidnappers, he said “the only positive steps to far taken among all the agreements is the election of Deans in the various faculties.”
The union, as opined by him “considers this position as deceptive, for this is the same management that recently, in a widely circulated publication dated 26th February 2021, claimed that all sources of income due for the University are forthcoming, and that management has enough to run the University.”
