Osun: NYSC calls for equal treatment of women

Kehinde Salawu, the National Youth Service Corps Gender Officer in Osun State, has described gender equality as not just a fundamental human right but the process by which a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable society is founded.

She said this while addressing the 2021 Batch B, Stream 1 corps members at the Permanent Orientation Camp, Ede, on Tuesday.

Salawu, who explained that gender roles have to do with both sexes, added that some of the roles are flexible and can be changed while some are natural and cannot be changed.

According to her, menopause and menstruation are exclusive to women while other roles, which are not natural, such as cooking, cleaning, building, bills payment and so on are flexible hence can be changed.

“The roles attached to women are said to be stipulated as a constant barrier as women especially in Africa are believed to be good only in the kitchen irrespective of the degree or certificate they acquire,” she said.

In highlighting the importance of girl child education, the Gender Officer disclosed that without equal education for both males and females, gender equality cannot be achieved.

While calling for male support and encouragement, she encouraged females not to shy away from contesting and competing with their male counterparts for various positions either in leadership or politics.

Salawu maintained that there would be no equality without the support of the males and women should be given the privilege of equality.

She also stressed the need for corps members to educate pregnant and nursing mothers on the need to eat balanced diets and also to educate them on the disadvantages of female genital mutilation.

“I implore you to perform the duty of creating awareness in your places of primary assignment on the Importance of education in the society such as sex education in the eradication of rape which is prevalent amongst both sexes as well as creating an encouraging atmosphere by both genders in maintaining equality”, she concluded.
