From its inception, IHS Nigeria has incessantly championed initiatives offering support to indigenes leading to an improvement in the quality of life of local communities.
The leading Nigerian tower operator has again demonstrated its commitment to enhancing girl-child education to achieve gender parity as a catalyst for national development by refurbishing the Queen Amina Girls Secondary School in Kaduna State.
In alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4), the school’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) laboratory was upgraded to become a center of excellence ensuring inclusive and equitable education for the students.
The facility now houses a seating capacity of 300 students, an upgrade from the previous 100. Monthly internet connectivity of 10mbps will also be provided for one year.
In the event of a power outage from the grid, an 80kva generator was installed to power the entire ICT laboratory building with a 20kva solar inverter system installed to back up the computers.
It is said that “Everyone wins when children, especially girls – have access to education”, with innovation and capacity building as core corporate values, IHS Nigeria has consistently championed lifelong learning opportunities in both the ICT and STEM industry.
As the world becomes more and more technology-driven, it is important now, more than ever, that children are taught and trained in STEM fields from a young age to develop their curiosity, drive innovation and overall, bridge the skills gap in the tech world.
To maintain the laboratory, IHS has instituted a sustainability program, which includes the management and training of staff to operate the center.
The telecommunications infrastructure provider will be working with IBM Nigeria to provide training and content.
The company will also explore extending its IHS Academy courses to the school’s teachers and management team.
By enhancing the quality of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in the Queen Amina Girls Secondary School in Kaduna State, IHS reiterates its commitment to creating a better future for those in local communities.
One in which they have the requisite skills to take advantage of socio-economic opportunities available to them.
The absence of well-equipped educational facilities in Northern Nigeria continues to impede access of the girl child to quality education, and initiatives like this will go a long way to help reduce this inadequacy.
